The Devil's Backbone
Published in Hardcover by Mysterious Press (February, 1998)
Author: Robert Greer
Average review score:

Action packed thriller from first to last page
African-American bounty hunter C.J. Floyd is frequently without money but never without adventure. His entourage includes Jamican born cowboy Billy De Long, the beautiful, patient, loving girlfriend Mavis; outgoing secretary and soon to be lawyer, Julie; ex-marine, new secretary Flora Jean; and ex-rodeo cowboys Dittier and Morgan.

C.J needs these key individuals to maintain his business and actually to sustain his life. He is a bail bondsman and sometimes bounty hunter who performs his work in the new, wild west.

This is the third in a series of novels by Mr. Greer and I think it is his best work yet.

Fun and entertaining
After earning $3K on a difficult but successful chase, Denver bail bond agent and bounty hunter CJ Floyd is looking forward to some needed R&R with his main woman. However, Morgan Williams and Dittier plead with CJ to look into the strange death of another friend, rodeo Hall of Famer Cletus Dolbey. Though CJ prefers to stay out of the way of the official police investigation, he agrees to investigate what happened to Cletus.

CJ soon learns that Cletus was found in a body of water, wearing a wet suit though the deceased was deathly afraid of water. He also learns that Cletus claimed to have found diamonds on his property. CJ begins to wonder if the murder of Cletus is over the diamonds or a simple act of jealousy over the rodeo star's success on the circuit. As another one of his cases interferes with his inquiries, CJ tries to uncover the identity of the culprit responsible for murdering a friend.

The third CJ Floyd novel, like the previous two books (THE DEVIL'S HATBAND and THE DEVIL'S RED NICKEL) is a wonderful who-done-it due to the lead protagonist and his friends. The story line consists of two cases that constantly moves forward in a fast-paced, exciting way. However, what makes this series so entertaining is Robert Greer's brilliant talent which allows CJ, a middle class black American, to struggle with white society without condemning anyone. This turns a well-written who-done-it into a top notch book. Harriet Klausner

The Devil's Hatband
Published in Hardcover by Mysterious Press (March, 1996)
Author: Robert O. Greer
Average review score:

It'll Keep You Guessing Till The Very End...
The Devil's Hatband is my first Robert Greer novel. A friend who reviews for a California-based magazine told me about him since she knew I'm interested in the mystery genre. CJ Floyd is a character that gets to your heart. I know some folks like their detectives (CJ's a bounty hunter, but you'd just as well call him a detective) hardboiled. CJ is tough but also a thinker. I like that. Mr. Greer wrote a very believable tale about the cattle industry in a time when a comment from Oprah can throw them into an uproar. I never realized how cutthroat the cattle business could be. And Mr. Greer peopled his novel with memorable folks like Billy Delong, Dittier Atkins and Morgan Williams broken down ex-rodeo cowboys whom I hated to say so long to. And Mavis, CJ's on-again, off-again lady who had HIS number but still liked to call sometimes. Fresh, lively and thoroughly entertaining. I'm ordering the other CJ Floyd mysteries.

DEFINITE NAIL-BITER.
THE DEVIL'S HATBAND IS AN IMPRESSIVE NOVEL FROM ROBERT O GREER. GREER HAS A TALENT FOR DEVELOPING BOTH LOVABLE AND HATEFUL CHARACTERS. GREER ALSO WRITES VIVID DESCRIPTIONS OF THE BEAUTIFUL AND HARSH ASPECTS OF LIFE IN DENVER AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN CJ FLOYD (DENVER BONDSMAN) AND VARIOUS DEGREES OF LAWBREAKERS WILL COMPLETELY OCCUPY YOUR MIND UNTIL YOU'VE FINISHED THE BOOK -- AND PERHAPS EVEN AFTER THAT! WELL DONE DR. GREER!

Faith and Our Father (Harlequin Superromance, No 983)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (April, 1901)
Author: Susan Floyd
Average review score:

The Gift of Love
Susan Floyd's books are unique, an exploration of love on many different levels, and full of warmth and humor and Real Life. The thing I really love about Faith and Our Father is the heartfelt emotion and honesty of the characters--particularly between the heroine and her sister, and the sizzle AND the genuineness of feeling between the heroine and the hero.

Susan Floyd has a distinctive "voice," a big heart, and a clear eye for the real dilemmas of life. Reading her work is not just entertaining, it makes me think and feel on a deep level. Highly recommended.

a wonderful tale of high school sweethearts...and then some.
This book is a must read! Jay Whitfield is a widow with two young sons to raise. In comes Faith Weaver, his high school sweetheart, who is back in town to "help" plan a party for her parents. Jay knows that Faith has secrets she is hiding and he finds himself falling in love with her all over again as she takes on the temporary nanny position for his sons. Faith's story will make you cry but at the same time, I found myself laughing over the antics of "dirty" Andy and little Sam with the trick stomach. The storyline in this book is backed up by a cast of supporting characters, Jay's parents and children, and Faith's family also. Although the romance between Jay and Faith drags at times, the book is written very well overall.

Great Religions by Which Men Live
Published in Paperback by Fawcett Books (December, 1990)
Authors: Floyd H. Ross and Hill
Average review score:

In my Father's house are many mansions.
This book, originally published in 1956, was my first introduction to comparative religion. Because the subject is essentially timeless, one could do far worse than to use it as a starting point even today. On the first page of the forward it draws the distinction between prophets and priests, and how both are found in every great religious tradition. I never forgot that. The perspective of the text is to look towards the truly prophetic and divinely inspired in all the priestly religions- to cut through the ossified forms and rituals. Above all, it points out that a worthy God, the true God, must be a God of all peoples.

Besides this enlightened approach to the unity of religious traditions, this book serves well in the secondary function as a reference book on the basic core beliefs, history, practices, holy days, customs, and sects of all the principle religions of the world. Well organised into sections on Brahmanic Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese Religions, Religion of Japan, and the Semitic Religions, with a full index, it is easy to quickly look up the detail you need. I know I've reached for my copy more times than I can count over the years.

The Great Religions by Which Men Live, by Ross & Hills
I found this book in a used book store, and although it is old (first copyright in 1956), it is very pertinent to today's understanding of the world's major religions. It is easy to read, almost as though the authors are talking to you. The authors are not telling anyone what to believe, but rather opening the doors of understanding. I occasionally reread sections, and learn something new each time.
Enjoy!

Henry Hobson Richardson: A Genius for Architecture
Published in Hardcover by The Monacelli Press (February, 1998)
Authors: Margaret Henderson Floyd and Paul Rocheleau
Average review score:

FINALLY----a long, gorgeous, color-photo Richardson book!!
This is just the kind of big, sumptuous, exhaustive book that Richardson has always deserved. Part coffee-table book, part monograph----entertaining, informative, great to look through. I grew up near Boston and Richardson's churches, train depots, and libraries were a part of the background until I took a close look at Trinity Church and realized that the same person who designed THAT designed all these other structures as well. Richardson not only revived Romanesque architecture but pointed the way to modernism. He was a pivotal figure who didn't live long enough. This well-produced book does him justice.

Quintessential Richardson
Anyone interested in Romanesque architecture and American architecture would be interested in this book. The quality of the images are outstanding as is the text. The book describes Richardson's complete artistic career and his numerous buildings in New England, Chicago, and throughout the U.S.

Awesome book!!
I was very very impressed with this book. I happen to know R.C. and Betsy personally and they are great people. They give off this warm radiance of love and you would never know that this happened to them. When I heard them tell their story I was shocked and I was just left in suspense...I wanted to know the whole story. When I heard they had a book I grabbed the first chance I could get to read it and was greatly impressed and it is a wonderful book. I could hardly put it down. It is definitely worth your money!

A compelling tale of how God calls, protects, and provides.
This is an incredible story of how God goes into the highways and byways to fulfill His Great Commision. Robert's true story is actually a real life portrait of a loving God who can look past this human existance and provide for the accomplishment of His own promises. In keeping with His word to extend the invitation to fellowship with Him in eternity, God calls both Robert and Betsy from a no-win situation to a life of peace and eternal purpose. This book is a quick read with many heart-pounding turns and heart-breaking situations. The reader will find in this book both a life that leads to nowhere and a God that is The Way.

Landscaping Herbs
Published in Paperback by Stipes Publishing Co. (December, 1998)
Authors: Barbara L. Collins and Floyd A. Giles
Average review score:

'Landscaping Herbs' Author Handles Her Herbs!
'LANDSCAPING HERBS' has color photos taken by the author. Detailed and unique sketches drawn by a professor at the University of Illinois. Extensive descriptions of over one thousand herbs. Even accurate and pertinant maps, tables, and listings. All of these strands together braid into one IMPRESSIVE reference guide. After reading 'LANDSCAPING HERBS', the only conclusion that the reader can make is that the author really knows her stuff. Enough said.

Excellent Book on the care and feeding of ornamental herbs.
I was impressed with the breath and depth of the author's knowledge of herbal botony. The book was easy to understant and a pleasure to read. The book was also asthetically pleasing and a good book to refer to again and again. I liked it!

What a Gripping Novel
This book caught me at page one and never let me go. Not since Tuesdays With Morrie have I really been so deeply touched. The story comes full circle with a surprise ending that leaves you completely satisfied. And to think it's a novel of life lessons! A must read.
